Little Earth Dakota Language Family Immersion Weekend

On November 22nd, 2015 – Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (Dakota Language Society) and Wicoie Nandagikendan hosted a Dakota Language Family Immersion weekend at the neighborhood early learning center located next to Little Earth in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The day opened and closed with a wočhékiye odówaŋ (prayer song).  Participants of all levels conversed in the Dakota language throughout the day.  We had fluent first language speakers, language teachers and beginners all in the same room.  During mealtime, participants discussed the importance of remembering to make a spirit plate when we eat.  The families that participated in the days event enjoyed being able to learn the language in a safe and fun environment!
