Dakota Language Family Immersion Camp – Upper Sioux Community

Upper Sioux CommunityPhežútazizi k’api – The place they dig for Yellow Medicine – aka the Upper Sioux Community invited Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (Dakota Language Society) to host a community language camp in January 2016.

Through TPR (total physical response) methods, participants learned about foods, basic verbs, animals, animal tracking, lacrosse, and some of the philosophies that go with being a Dakota person and speaker.  A local drum group from the community came and sang for the people.  It was beautiful to hear the Dakota language spoken all day in Dakota homeland by Dakota people of all generations!

Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (Dakota Language Society) was able to giveaway over 50 copies of the Level 1 Speak Dakota textbook and CD.  We hope this event helps encourage the people to continue to use the Dakota language in every aspect of their daily lives.

Wóphida to the Phežútazizi k’api Oyate!
